Burn prevention can avoid tragedies. That is why
Sunshine Foundation carries out educational activities all year
long across Taiwan to raise awareness and prevent unfortunate accidents.
Campaigns in schools and in communities not only contribute to preventing
burns and educating the public about appropriate first aid techniques,
but they are also an opportunity to raise awareness about the needs
and rights of burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement.
This advocacy work helps increase public understanding and acceptance
for people with facial disfigurement, thus diminishing the obstacles
they might face in daily life or in pursuing their education and
employment goals.

The social education work of Sunshine Foundation includes:
|
-
Prevention and education
activities in the community: The
social educators of Sunshine Foundation visit schools and communities,
organizing activities to teach about fire safety, burn prevention,
and first aid. Our activities also focus on enhancing peopleˇ¦s
understanding of the experience of burn survivors, to reduce
discrimination and strengthen support for burn survivors when
they return in the community.
-
Prevention campaigns
online and in the media: Through
campaign websites and blogs, as well as media exposure, we raise
awareness about burn prevention.
-
Educational material:
Sunshine Foundation produces various
educational materials to disseminate knowledge (CD, DVD, books
and brochures), most of them targeting children.
-
Online education platform:
Teachers, parents, and the general
public can have access online to a wide variety of information
and tools on burn prevention and safety through the Sunshine
Online Website at http://online.sunshine.org.tw/. The website
also has a section for children, with educative cartoons, games,
and videos.
-
Training of teachers:
Sunshine also disseminates its education model by organizing
trainings for teachers and school staff so that they can replicate
burn prevention and safety education in their own schools.
-
Public safety advocacy:
Over time, the causes of burn have changed, with new sources
of hazard emerging all the time. Since its establishment, Sunshine
Foundation has identified products whose potential to cause
injuries has been ignored (for example, low quality essential
oils that cause burners to explode). Through the power of media
and by advocating for better legislation, the Foundation has
been informing the public of these dangers and reminding the
government of its responsibility to ensure public safety.
|
- A total of 94 burn prevention and social acceptance activities were organized in 2010, reaching out to 12,596 people.
- A total of 267 oral cancer prevention activities were held, attended by 37,490 participants.
- Sunshine Online website received over 420,000 hits and gained 181 new members.
