About the conference

Background

On May 15-16, 2004 , Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation held the First International Conference on Psychological Research and Services for Burn Survivors and People with Facial Disfigurement. The goal of this event was to address the limited attention given to psychological issues facing burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement, as well as encourage greater research in this area. International speakers included Ms. Amy Acton, Executive Director of Phoenix Society, Ms. Barbara Kammerer Quayle, Dr. Kee-On NG from Hong Kong and Dr. Dalia Gilboa from Israel . Some 200 professionals from the health and social work fields attended the event, making it a great success.

The first conference revealed the need to further explore psychological issues in relation to the social environment. That is why the second edition of this international conference to be held on May 17-18, 2008 will focus on the psychosocial research and services for burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement. This event will continue to examine experiences and innovative approaches from Taiwan and abroad, thus creating a platform for discussion and the sharing of knowledge. In addition, a special workshop on hypnosis for pain and itch management will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 .

Goal

Through discussion on research findings and sharing of professional field experiences, it is hoped that this conference will improve and emphasize the need for psychosocial services to burn survivors and people with facial disfigurement, and provide directions for future research.

Health professionals, researchers and social welfare professionals in areas related to burns and facial disfigurement are invited to participate.
